ABOUT THE BOOK: The impact of the British rule and the struggle for independence in India is a fascinating and absorbing. Some of the burning socio-economic and political problems of contemporary India can be traced back to the colonial rule. It ever since was attracted by the developments in the country. As such my attention was very much drawn towards Indian affairs including conditions inherited form the British dominance and to the understanding of the past with a view to suggesting ways and means to shape the present and future. Naturally, I always cherished the hope of writing a book presenting the colonial exploitation or the tragic story of the Indian people and their glorious struggles against the British and their aspects of development in colonial period in Andhra Pradesh. The situation which enabled a Company of merchant to conquer India, its impact on India and the Indian response, in the form of regional and national struggles, especially some parts of Andhra Pradesh, have been deals with in this book. British attitudes were colonial in that information and perspectives were sought so as to possess, categoriseand at time subvert India. British strategies were imperial because they were designed both to protect and extend the empire and also, out of a sense of responsibility, to meet what were thought to be positive goals.
